  19. Tribal communities depend greatly on forests for their survival and way of life. For many of them, the forest is not only a place to live but also the main source of livelihood. It provides a wide range of food such as fruits, edible leaves, honey, roots and sometimes wild animals for nourishment. Forests also supply wood, bamboo and other materials that are used for building houses and making tools, handicrafts and other traditional items. Because of this close dependence, forests play a very important role in the tribal economy. It is often believed that tribal people maintain a balanced relationship with nature and help in protecting forest resources. Their traditional knowledge about forest plants and resources has developed over generations. This knowledge can be very useful for managing and developing forests. Instead of considering tribal people only as collectors of minor forest produce, they should be encouraged to cultivate and manage these resources and take part actively in forest conservation.
